Drinking With Cobb

"And that, my friend, is one heck of a fine mint julep."

Besides loving the pleasures of smoking cigars, Cobb was always up for a good  drink. Below is Cobb's most famous drink recipe for the classic Kentucky Mint Julep. This coaster with the famous recipe was given out to patrons of the old Hotel Irvin Cobb in Paducah for many years.

Special thanks goes to former Paducah resident Kim Crawford for sending in this image!

Here are two more drink recipes that Cobb himself concocted and published in a 1934 booklet under the title "Irvin S. Cobb's Own Recipe Book." The booklet contained the recipes for creating 71 drinks. I will post more of Cobb's famous drink concoctions in the near future.

OLD-FASHIONED WHISKEY:

One-half piece Sugar

2 dashes Angostura Bitters

1 1/2 jiggers Paul Jones or Four Roses Whiskey

1 slice Orange

1 slice Lemon

1 slice Pineapple

2 dashes Curacao.

Muddle sugar and bitters with pestle. Add cube of ice, whiskey and Curacao and decorate with fruit. This cocktail was created at the Pendennis Club in Louisville in honor of a famous old-fashioned Kentucky Colnel. I claim it was worthy of him.

WHISKEY DAISY:

Juice of 1/2 Lime and 1/4 Lemon

2 dashes Grenadine

2 dashes Carbonated Water

1 jigger Antique or Paul Jones Whiskey.

Use silver mug or highball glass, put in above ingredients, fill with finely crushed ice, stir until mug or glass is frosted, decorate with Fruit and Fresh Mint and serve with straws. This drink was widel popular before Prohibition; but died out during Volstead. It deserves a re-birth.
